Scope of Practice
Disability management is a field steeped in insurance-based rehabilitation. Over the years, the industry has expanded and now covers a wide variety of services and solutions to help people with illnesses, injuries, and disabilities to return to or stay at work.
To keep up with this ever-evolving industry, every 5 years the CDMS engages in a job analysis known as the "Role & Function Study.” In addition to keeping CDMS eligibility criteria and certification examination content relevant, this study serves to identify scope of practice.
2014 Role & Function Study
The most recent Role & Function Study was conducted in 2014. As identified by experts in the field and verified by practicing absence and disability managers who were surveyed, the study confirmed the four practice areas or domains.
- Disability and Work Interruption Case Management includes gathering relevant case information; synthesizing information; interpreting case-specific local, state, and federal regulations; and developing a case management plan.
- Workplace Intervention for Disability Prevention includes conducting organizational assessments, evaluating policies and procedures, presenting the business rationale for disability management programs, managing human resources, applying labor relation laws, and managing resources.
- Program Development, Management, and Evaluation includes organizing and planning disability management programs; applying qualitative and quantitative measurements; interpreting financial/risk data; designing programs with rewards and incentives; and tracking cost, operational, and outcomes data.
- Employment Leaves and Benefits Administration includes managing health-related employment leaves, effectively communicating and explaining essential elements of benefits and employment policies to workers to mitigate adverse impact and facilitate informed decision making as well as identifying risks associated with interruptions and leaves.
